Three Claims

Three Claims

1.     1st Claim: “A quarter of all federal aid goes to for-profits, while they enroll only 10 percent of students” then supported by facts about for-profit colleges having trouble paying loans back.
2.     2nd Claim: For-profit colleges acquire large amounts of money from the federal government. This is supported by subsidized loans, the 90/10 Rule, default rates, and pell grants.
3.     3rd Claim: For-profit colleges abuse their power and take advantage of students who come from low- income and poor backgrounds. This is supported by the official documents from Corinthian Colleges filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

1.     “Old-line research universities were gilding their walled-off academics city-states”(55).
2.     “Traditional universities lack evidence to bash for-profits”(55).
3.     “Fast-developing methods of teaching students over the internet”(54).

One element of Carey’s text I would like to investigate is strategy that for-profit colleges use in more detail and specification.
